Genre: Coming of age, pregnancy, feminism, telenovela
Summary
I'm betting most of you already know of this show's American spinoff, Jane the Virgin! Like its American counterpart, Juana la Virgen is a ~drama~ about overachieving, independent and freethinking Juana who, right after receiving an invitation to a prestigious university, ends up pregnant hrough a bonkers medical mishap. The plot thickens with the revelation that Juana is a virgin, a fun fact that her family and friends never let her forget. A trendy difference between the American and Colombian versions of the show is that while the American Jane has chosen to remain a virgin for religious reasons, Juana is very vocal about the fact that she's remaining celibate simply because she WANTS to, not because she wants to follow any religious ideology.
Mini-Critique
Anyone who's a fan of Jane the Virgin would definitely love the original just as much, if not more! As your typical 90's/early 2000's TV show, Juana la Virgen is all about girl power and spunk - a theme that's hard to dislike unless you're heartless! The show's only real shortcomings are its relatively poor camerawork/image quality and the cheesy over-acting that defines the telenovela genre. I'd suggest this show for most everyone, save film connoisseurs who simply can't deal with bad image quality or the occasional fake cry.
Difficulty Rating
★★★★✩ Tough Cookie
See our "About" page for an overview of our difficulty ratings!
Unlike most of the shows and movies Borderlands recommends, I haven't been able to find a version of Juana la Virgen with subtitles available, Spanish or English. Because of this, the show is set at an unmoving ★★★★✩ Tough Cookie. Because Juana la Virgen is a telenovela, it might even be a little tougher as the plot is by default winding and fairly confusing.
