Genre: Musical, tragedy
First of all, please take a good long gander at this beautiful cast photo up here. Drink it in. Note the copious ruffles. Admire the eyeliner. This wonderful steampunk/scene/flamboyant cowboy aesthetic permeates the entire musical and is what differentiates it from your classic Romeo and Juliet performance. Roméo et Juliette is an edgy take on the classic love story, where the entire town appears to have embraced a flouncy-steampunk vibe, death has somehow materialized as a shrouded, dancing woman and Mercutio and Tybalt are even more transparent about their love affair.
Unfortunately, it's very hard to find a video of the full play online, so I've only been able to find various clips from the performances. So if you're looking for a tight, comprehensive plot... this isn't for you. But if you're looking for a queer-tactic, overblown, frill-filled take on a tragic classic it sure is!

This is another sans-subtitles treat which would usually make Roméo et Juliette ★★★✩✩ Tough Cookie level, but because all of these clips are song numbers with pretty clear titles (Le duel, Roi du monde, On dit dans la rue...) and feature Broadway-caliber actors who definitely know how to get their point across, language learners at an ★★★✩✩ Intermediate or even ★★★✩✩ Easygoing level should be able to understand the gist it.
